External evaluation of the quality of Hematology laboratories in Nicaragua
Abstract
In Nicaragua, automated analyzers have been implemented in Hematology laboratories since 2008, with the aim of improving the quality of the processes. In addition, the laboratories participate in an external quality assessment program called "RANDOX International Quality Assessment Scheme" (RIQAS). The research focuses on analyzing the performance indicators of the external quality assessment program in the hematology laboratories of the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua in 2022. A retrospective approach was used, and data were collected from external controls sent by the laboratories. The sample consisted of 7 laboratories of the Ministry of Health participating in the program, distributed across different levels of care.
The results of the external quality assessment program were generally acceptable, some with excellent performances for the parameters evaluated, although some discrepancies were observed in the measurements of RDW and platelet count. This does not represent a weakness, but rather an opportunity to improve the consistency and precision of the results. It is advisable to review and adjust the procedures in the mentioned analyses. Continuing with these efforts will ensure that laboratories continue to offer first-class service and precision in their measurements, which will contribute substantially to public health in Nicaragua.
