Demographic characteristics, health and family support of older adults in the Adult Day Center, Jacaleapa, El Paraíso, Honduras, 2020

The objective of the study was to describe the characteristics of the participants in an adult day program who received integrated health and social recreation services, as well as to gather the perceptions of their relatives on the impact of the program on the well-being of older adults in the day center, Jacaleapa, Honduras. The design was descriptive, with a cross-sectional survey with 302 participating older adults and 302 accompanying relatives. Structured sociodemographic, self-reported health, and family support questions were used. With regards to the demographic characteristics, the majority were female (76.5%), aged 60-69 years (70.19%), only 68.9% of the older adults finished their primary education; spending most of their life doing housework (73.8%). The vast majority reported chronic diseases (98%). The perceived impact of family members was very positive. In conclusion, the study allowed us to know the reality about the conditions of the elderly at a demographic and health level, which contributes to formulate strategies that enhance the quality of health services for the elderly, in this case the program of the Adult Day Center from Jacaleapa in Paradise.
