University in the Countryside: The Experience on the North Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua

Abstract

This article discusses the experience of the University   in the Countryside (UNICAM), implemented by   the University of the Autonomous Regions of the   Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast (URACCAN), in the   Autonomous Region of the North Caribbean Coast   of Nicaragua, as a revolutionary, innovative and   transformative educational process with relevance,   interculturality, humanism and quality in multiethnic   and multicultural contexts. Program that is part of   a project promoted by the Government of Unity   and National Reconciliation, which arises from the   needs to increase coverage and access to public, free   Higher Education with quality of protagonists living   in communities further away from urban centres;   as part of the restitution of rights. In this sense, it is   opened and developed, in four indigenous territories:   Prinzapolka, Sauni As, Kambla and Waspam,   benefiting 250 protagonist students from more   than 40 communities, in the training of teachers in   Education Sciences in the specialties of: Mathematics,   Intercultural Education Bilingual, English and Hispanic   Language and Literature for the strengthening and   development of the Regional Autonomous Educational   Subsystem, community life plans, communities and   the country. The main purpose of this article is to   present with descriptive character the experience   of UNICAM implemented by the University of the   Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean   Coast (URACCAN), in the Northern Autonomous   Region of Nicaragua, as an emblematic, revolutionary,   innovative and transformative academic program   that guarantees coverage, access, inclusiveness   and equity to Higher Education and strengthens the   community for the development with identity of the   peoples, thanks to the goodwill and disposition of   the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity   and the National Council of Universities (CNU), the   governing body of Higher Education in Nicaragua.
