Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on the impact of the knowledge economy on the public university and how it affects the extension function that is understood as the construction of different systems of actions aimed at promoting and enhancing the university-society bond, from the integration of university functions, the disciplines and knowledge. This implies a questioning of the instituted, allowing profound cultural changes, the reconstruction of academic knowledge, an interdisciplinary approach, ethical, social, political commitment and innovation.

The methodology used for this study was descriptive based on relevant texts in this regard, looking for bibliography and adequate sources. It concludes that the extension policy that is part of the educational policy, must have as its objective the foundation which society demands in the building knowledge and in their extension to a complex and globalized society.
