Abstract

In this article, the sustainability of tourism in the city of León, Nicaragua, is examined through the application of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC). The main objective is to analyze how tourist growth in the region has been managed, considering principles of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The research was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, which included the collection of secondary data from reports and government databases, as well as quantitative and qualitative analyses. Additionally, interviews were conducted with key stakeholders in the local tourism sector. The findings reveal a notable commitment to sustainable tourism management and active community participation. However, areas requiring attention and improvement were also identified, such as public accessibility and the implementation of adequate wage policies for sector workers. Despite these challenges, it was observed that support and promotion programs have been effective, although it is essential to further encourage sustainable production and the development of local entrepreneurs. León, with its rich cultural and historical heritage, presents a high potential to attract tourists, which in turn can stimulate the local economy and create new employment opportunities. This analysis provides a comprehensive view of the challenges and opportunities facing León on its path to responsible and sustainable tourism. By identifying both successes and areas for improvement, it lays the groundwork for a future in which tourism positively contributes to the well-being of the community and the natural environment.
