Indigenous Idols In The Spanish Testimonies Of The Conquest Of Honduras. A Criticism Of Sources

In this article, three Spanish testimonies about indigenous idols at the time of the Castilian invasion of Honduras (1524-1540) are discussed, with the aim of making a critique of sources to verify their historical credibility. Specifically, the following are analyzed: the Apologetic Summary History of Bartolomé de las Casas; a 1526 letter from the Governor of Honduras Diego López de Salcedo and; a passage from the Fourth Decade of the General History of Antonio de Herrera. The content of these texts is contrasted with that contained in primary sources of the time and in recent archaeological and anthropological investigations. From the study, it was possible to verify the probability that these stories have happened, although serious objections were found that prevent their validation as historical facts.
