Abstract

The sports psychology is a little studied branch in our context, this is the reason why the research team decided to explore the function of the defense mechanisms in the sport practice. Due to the little existing information in this branch, it focused on studying a broader and deeper approach of the psychology: The Psychoanalysis. Therefore, the first question is posed, what is the function that fulfills the defense mechanisms of the “me” in the sport practice of the athletes of II semester of 2017 in FAREM-Estelí? Freud poses the defense mechanisms as resistances that the human being uses to face situations that generate conflicts as a consequence of a mnémica mark that affects in different ways and at different levels, being the unconscious the most affected. This study is qualitative, phenomenological and exploratory. The sample was formed by 12 athletes from different areas, 4 coaches and 2 informants; these were selected in volunteers samples which they agreed to participate in. The most relevant results obtained showed us that the function that the defense mechanisms exercise governs as a channel and catalyst that purifies the athlete in unpleasant situations.
