Abstract

This article examines the recurrent flood risks faced by the El Brasil community in Tipitapa, Nicaragua, caused by the Malacatoya River’s overflow during the rainy season. The absence of prior research on risk and vulnerability in rural Tipitapa underscores the need to better understand and address these issues. The community grapples with threats such as contaminated water consumption, which has led to a notable rise in diseases like chronic kidney disease and skin cancer. Furthermore, frequent flooding has exacerbated the spread of waterborne illnesses. In response, the community has organized efforts to manage these risks, demonstrating its collective initiative to improve living conditions and reduce vulnerability. This study underscores the importance of risk management in vulnerable communities and proposes measures such as resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and community education to enhance resilience against future challenges.
