Abstract

The mortality and incidence of sepsis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a worldwide problem, mainly in developing countries; This is because the majority of sepsis cases admitted to the PICU occur as a result of a complication of different infections. The objective of this study is to analyze the Mortality and Incidence of Sepsis in the pediatric intensive care unit of the Hospital Escuela César Amador Molina in the first semester of 2021. It is a descriptive, cross-sectional observational study with a population of 102 patients, and one mestra of 16 patients, the incidence being 15%. The data were obtained from the review of the clinical record of each of the selected patients, the result was that 50% were admitted with a diagnosis of sepsis and the other 50% developed sepsis during their hospital stay. The most affected population was males, with 68% being those under one year of age the most prevalent (75%). 56.3% of the patients were eutrophic and 37.5% had severe malnutrition. Referring to the focus of infection, 37.5% had associated pneumonia in the community and 31% had ventilator-associated pneumonia; 25% of the patients had acute diarrheal syndrome, 31.4% had congenital anomalies. Mortality was 68.8%. It was concluded that the incidence of patients with a diagnosis of sepis is lower related to other studies, but a high mortality rate.
