Community Seed Banks and their contribution to community social development, El Naranjo and El Salto experience, Sebaco, Matagalpa Nicaragua 2024
Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of Community Seed Banks (BCS) on the social development of the El Naranjo and El Salto communities, located in the municipality of Sébaco, department of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Two focus groups and eight interviews were used to understand farmers’ issues and evaluate how BCS have helped mitigate their challenges. The main problems identified include the lack of access to quality seeds, the lack of financing with affordable rates and the effects of climate change. However, the BCS have made significant progress in adopting resilient agricultural practices and promoting community leadership, especially among women and youth. The study concludes that BCS not only improve farmers’ productivity and adaptation, but also strengthen social cohesion and empowerment in rural communities (Martínez et al., 2020; De Boef et al., 2010)
