The University Extension is one of the three substantive functions of the University (together with research and teaching) and its objective is to promote cultural development, and the transfer of knowledge and culture between the different social sectors of the community. Its mission is to consolidate the link between the University and the community, through a historical review of how extension arises and the great contributions that scientists make to improve from universities to society, the needs of the environment and offer solutions to the problems both at the national and Latin American levels, creating synergies, interacting and assuming commitments from all political, social, cultural and economic approaches to achieve sustainable development as a person, as a country. Therefore, this documentary essay is a reflection on the realities of university extension at the national and Latin American level, highlighting research as a key point to achieve success in the advancement of university extension and society in general.
